Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on poker.

The real advancement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would often wager against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL hold'em.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the greatest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
