Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants get flustered. Unlike Hold'em, in which the board can make up every player's hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It's the strongest possible hand out of every player's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It's the very same notion in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free's up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there's no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at first, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi/lo provides an amazing assortment of wagering choices and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, along with a few shooting for the low hand.
