Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed taking part in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's initial two years were rough as he played countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus attention more on the game.

The real advancement in his abilities began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would frequently challenge one another. Howard had access into several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL texas hold'em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
