Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It's a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player's hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It's the very same notion in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there's no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complex initially, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi/low offers an exciting collection of wagering options and because you have many individuals trying for the high, as well as many battling for the low.
