Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker contender in the world by quite a few of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to pickup everything he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn't permit the negative feedback from others kill his ambition of being one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.

Phil started playing intently after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a learning period and coming away with a win was not a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed many of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his success to discipline and a continuing passion for poker. Phil states that he's learning every single day and is quite abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes mistakes in each session of poker and constantly aspires to improve.

Although Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a regular basis.
