Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed betting on various card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's 1st two years were tough as he would play many hours and do not win most times. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often play against each other. He was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
