Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he loved participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's 1st two years were difficult as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he might boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus more on poker.

The actual improvement in his game began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly compete against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena ever. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
